  M. Scott Alprin opened Alprin Law Offices in Washington, D.C. in June 2005.  On the day it opened, Alprin Law Offices had two faithful clients and was managing only a handful of matters.  These days, Alprin Law Offices proudly cares for hundreds upon hundreds of trademark matters for over 90 clients, including international trademark law firms from Japan, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, Vietnam.  

 In addition to running Alprin Law Offices, Mr. Alprin occasionally speaks on U.S. trademark law in Japan.  In August 2006 and February 2008, Mr. Alprin gave lectures in Tokyo in Japanese to members of the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA) in Tokyo on trademark practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  In February 2008, Mr. Alprin also spoke in Japanese to JPAA members in Nagoya, and to patent agents at various firms around Japan, on the same topic.  In August 2006, Mr. Alprin lectured in Japanese at the Osaka Kougyo Daigaku to undergrad and graduate students on trademark prosecution in the United States. 

 Mr. Alprin spent the years 2000 to 2003 at the firm of Armstrong, Westerman & Hattori in Washington, D.C., where he had interned during law school.  Mr. Alprin left the Armstrong firm in the fall of 2003 and moved to Westerman, Hattori, Daniels & Adrian, becoming the head of the trademark department there for one year.  From the fall of 2004 to the June of 2005, Mr. Alprin worked as a trademark associate at the firm of Baker & Hostetler.  In June of 2005, Mr. Alprin opened his own office, Alprin Law Offices, in downtown Washington, D.C.  

 Mr. Alprin is of counsel to two firms, Rabin & Berdo, P.C., in Washington, D.C., and Ditthavong, Mori & Steiner in Northern Virginia.  Mr. Alprin also served as a lecturer and coordinator for the Japanese Intellectual Property Association (JIPA) meeting sponsored by Westerman, Hattori, Daniels & Adrian in the fall of 2005 and 2007.

 Mr. Alprin’s experience in intellectual property law includes the following:  prosecuting trademark applications and maintaining registrations at the U.S. Patent and Trademark; handling representation of both applicants and opposers in opposition proceedings, including all aspects of negotiation and discovery; negotiating consent agreements on behalf of applicants; preparing trademark search reports regarding availability of trademarks for use and registration in the U.S.; preparing assignments and other transfers of trademark and patent rights; and preparing licensing agreements.

 Mr. Alprin started studying Japanese over 20 years ago.  He studied the Japanese language throughout his time at Colby College in Maine, and spent three months in Kobe as an exchange student during his junior year in 1990.  Mr. Alprin returned to Japan to teach English from 1992 to 1995 in Aichi-ken public high schools.  During this time, Mr. Alprin perfected his knowledge of the 2,000 “jyoyo” kanji.  In 1999, Mr. Alprin spent a year in Kyoto at Ritsumeikan University.  During his time in Kyoto, Mr. Alprin interned at the Kobyasi Patent and Trademark Office and wrote a thesis in Japanese comparing U.S. and Japanese trademark systems.  In 1999 and 2000, Mr. Alprin developed a new system for teaching kanji to native speakers of English, and, in 2002 and 2003, spoke at two Japanese linguistic conferences in the Washington, D.C. area.  Mr. Alprin has been published in the field of Japanese education.

 Mr. Alprin’s hobbies include piano, tennis, ice hockey and jogging.  Mr. Alprin played for the Chunichi Wings ice hockey team from 1992 to 1995 in Nagoya at the same rink where Ito Midori and Asada Mao (figure skating Olympians) trained.  Mr. Alprin helped to guide a blind Japanese runner in the New York Marathon each year from 2001 to 2008.
